History

The Reverend Bill Elliot initiated the idea to form a tennis club in Elstree and a constitution was set out.
The first game of tennis was played on "grass courts" behind Hill House in Elstree Village (now a nursing home) – after the courts had been cleared of goats' and sheep's droppings.
An agreement was made for land at the corner of Aldenham Road to be leased from Hertsmere Borough Council at £30 per annum and a '200' Club was launched to raise funds.
Three hard courts were built at a cost of £13,500 and the Cricket Club kindly allowed the Tennis Club to use their changing rooms and social facilities. On 11 May the courts were officially opened by the Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood, Dennis Bothwick.
The First Hertsmere Civic tournament was held at the Club and the first teams were entered in the Watford League.
The Club hosted a tournament for the Tennis Club in Fontenay aux Roses, the twin town for Elstree and Borehamwood.
A contract was signed with a Danish company to erect what is now the Clubhouse.
Construction of the Clubhouse was started in April and completed in July.
The Clubhouse was officially opened by Ian King from the LTA and permission was granted for floodlights.
Three more courts were built and the floodlights were installed on them.

The majority of our founder members still live locally and are very supportive of the Club.
